A Brief History Of Sola Fide

In 1970, five families gathered in Clayton County and formed the first Wisconsin Synod congregation in Georgia.  Five years later, Sola Scriptura (By Scripture Alone) was in their new sanctuary on Flat Shoals Road in Decatur.  In late 1976, it was determined that a second congregation should be established in the Atlanta area.   After investigation, it was decided to locate in the Lawrenceville area.  A minister was called and on July 17th, 1977, Pastor Larry Zahn, a recent graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin was ordained at Sola Scriptura.

Services began at the Kindercare Center in Lawrenceville with about 25 attending.   After careful consideration and discussion, Sola Fide (By Faith Alone) was selected as the name of the congregation.  A search for a piece of land began in early 1978.   By November, four acres had been purchased on Highway 124 and a sign proclaimed this as the future site of Sola Fide Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The new combined chapel and educational building was dedicated in February 1981.   The building contained 2,100 square feet.  As the physical structure had grown during 1980, so had the congregation totaling 81 members with an average attendance of 45.   The fifth anniversary of Sola Fide was celebrated on July 25th with a potluck and cookout.  With 159 members, it was the fastest growing church in the South Central Conference of the South Atlantic District.  The incredible growth of Sola Fide was a reflection of the Lord’s blessings.

In the Fall of 1983, the congregation sought Synod’s approval to construct a parsonage.  Weather delayed work on the parsonage, but in November 1984, the Zahn family moved out of rental housing and into the new three-bedroom house.  Around the same time, Sola Fide received permission to begin planning for a new sanctuary.

The sanctuary was dedicated on March 2nd, 1986.  With 120 attending on an average Sunday, two services were begun in the fall of 1985.  By the end of 1986, average attendance was 150, but the new worship facility was more than able to accommodate it.   Two services each Sunday continued to be held.

Growth continued through 1989 and totaled 272 members by the end of the year.  In early November, Pastor Zahn who had been the shepherd of the congregation since its beginning, accepted a call to King of Kings Lutheran Church in Maitland, Florida.   For a year, Sola Fide was without a full time pastor, yet continued to grow and flourish.  Membership increased and the plans for an education building were completed during the summer and early fall of 1990.  The members did a large percentage of the labor and dedication took place on November 18th.  On that same date, Pastor Edward Schuppe was installed as the new pastor after serving 13 ½ years at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Florida.

By the end of 1993, there were 417 members on the rolls with an average attendance for the year of 220 each Sunday.  Gwinnett County continued to grow rapidly and a long-range planning committee was created late that year to explore new ways to reach out to the many new residents.

In 1994, a group of concerned parents began to work toward the creation of a school as part of the mission of Sola Fide Lutheran Church.  Our efforts were rewarded in August 1995 when the elementary school opened with 2 teachers and 19 students.   Supported by many members of the church who contributed their time, talent and material, the school not only thrived, but grew.  By August of 1996, school enrollment had grown to 31 students.  Growth continued during the second and third years of the school peaking at over 40 students. A decision was made to add a third teacher to the staff to provide an even better educational opportunity.

Rapid membership growth also necessitated the calling of an additional pastor.   Pastor David Schneider was installed in July of 1995.

During 1995 and 1996, it became evident that the congregation was quickly outgrowing their existing facilities and the need to move toward active land acquisition was pressing.  In a period of six weeks beginning in early December 1996, Sola Fide moved from a "land locked" owner of four acres of land to approving the purchase of 22 acres of land on Webb Gin House Road, a mile and a half from the current property.  The Church Council acted to make an offer on the full 22 acres on December 16 contingent on the approval of the Congregation and assurance of financing.   The Wisconsin Synod Board of Trustees assured financing of the property.  On January 12th, 1997, the Congregation approved the purchase of the land under terms agreed to with the owner.  On March 15th, we closed on the property.

In July of 1999, Jon Woldt accepted the divine call to serve as Principal and Teacher at Sola Fide Lutheran Elementary School.  Classes for the 1999-2000 school year along with Sola Fide's worship services and church activities were held at 875 Scenic Highway (pending sale of the 875 Scenic Highway property and the completion of construction of the multi-use building on our new church/school property at 1307 Webb Gin House Road).

Sola Fide sold its facilities at 875 Scenic Highway to the Peace Presbyterian congregation.  This allowed construction of the new church/school facility at 1307 Webb Gin House Road to began in November of 1999.  The construction of our new church/school facility was completed in July of 2000.

The First Sunday Worship Service in the new facility was held on July 23rd, 2000.  The Dedication Service for our new church/school facility was conducted on October 15th.  We held our first Fall Festival on our new church/school grounds on October 28th.

In November of 2000, Pastor Schneider received and accepted a divine call to serve as Pastor at Cross Of Christ Lutheran Church in Universal City, Texas.  The Schneider Family was honored with an Appreciation Dinner prior to their departure.

The first Christmas in our new facility was a very special time as was our First Easter in April of 2001.  However, many unforeseen changes lay ahead for the Sola Fide.  But, as always, the Lord provides for our needs.

During a Congregational Call Meeting in April 2001, our current School Principal, Jon Woldt, was called by Sola Fide to serve in the newly created position, Youth & Family Minister.  Mr. Woldt accepted the divine call.

In May of 2001, Chris Fischer was assigned from Martin Luther College to serve as our new School Principal and Upper Grades Teacher.  Chris and his wife Jamie relocated to Georgia in July at which time Chris was ordained and installed into his new position.  During the same Installation Service, Jon Woldt was installed as our new Youth & Family Minister.

God had even more changes planned for our July.  Pastor Edward Schuppe, our current pastor, received and accepted a divine call to serve as Mission Counselor for the Southeastern Wisconsin and South Atlantic District Mission Boards.  Pastor Schuppe's last Sunday at Sola Fide was August 12th.  This date had (many months prior) been scheduled as the kickoff day for a new worship concept, Unity Sunday.  On Unity Sunday, all the week's worship services are combined into one BIG service at 10:00 a.m.  This allows fellowship among members who might normally attend a different day's service.  At the conclusion of the August 12th Unity Sunday service, a Farewell Reception was held for the Schuppe Family.

In October 2001, the congregation of Sola Fide extended a divine pastoral call to Pastor Michael D. Schultz (currently serving at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Flagstaff, Arizona).  On November 2nd, 2001, Pastor Schultz accepted our call.  During a special Installation Service on December 9th, 2001, Pastor Schultz was installed as our new church pastor.

The weekend of October 5th & 6th, 2002, Sola Fide Evangelical Lutheran Church & School celebrated its 25th Anniversary.  On Saturday, members and friends gathered for the 25th Anniversary Picnic.  On Sunday afternoon, Sola Fide held its 25th Anniversary Service, which was followed by a Silver Anniversary Program and Fellowship Dinner.

In August 2004, our Youth & Family Minister, Mr. Jon Woldt, accepted a call to serve as principal at Faith Lutheran Church and School in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  A "Farewell Reception" was held for The Woldts prior to their departure.

Note: The long-range vision for our 22 acre property includes a larger chapel, an area Lutheran High School and a retirement facility.
